Scientists Find First Erectile Dysfunction Gene, Shed Light To New Treatments

What Causes Erectile Dysfunction? It Could Be in Your Genes Scientists have found a new cause of impotence

According to Eric Jorgenson, a scientist at Kaiser Permanente Northern California's Division of Research and lead author of the study, it is good news for all man affected by ED, as "identifying the first genetic risk factor for erectile dysfunction is an exciting discovery because it opens the door for investigations into new, genetic-based therapies". His discovery, according to experts, allows to say that sexual dysfunction in men partly is of genetic nature, reports MedikForum. This risk was independent of known erectile dysfunction risk factors.

The study was published October 8 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In the new study, Jorgenson and his colleagues identified that the genetic variant alone accounts for 2 percent of the risk.

In particular, the researchers found that the appearance of impotence are a mutation of the gene SIM1.

The average population risk is of one in five men, according to a 2007 study in the United States, but the ratio increases sharply with age.

It turned out that nearly a quarter of the risk of erectile dysfunction increases variation in the region of SIM1.

"We know that there are other risk factors for erectile dysfunction, including smoking, obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease", he continued.

The researchers first found the gene, in which men develop impotence. Guys completed sexual health surveys, and the team looked at whether participants were diagnosed with erectile dysfunction or received treatment for the condition. Moreover, a recent research shows that, in some cases, a specific DNA variation could play a role in the development of erectile dysfunction. The SIM1 gene helps regulate our body weight and is also involved in a pathway that produces two hormones known to stimulate erections. The researchers noted that it may interfere with the functioning of certain brain circuits.

Think of a gene like a light bulb, Jorgenson said: The promoter is like a light switch, and an enhancer acts like the fuse box. The erectile dysfunction locus is located near, but not in, the SIM1 gene.

As per Jorgenson, 50 percent of men with erectile dysfunction do not respond to the dysfunction treatments now available. "Hopefully, this will translate into better treatments and, importantly, prevention approaches for the men and their partners who often suffer silently with this condition".
