Saudi Crown Prince behind journalist Khashoggi's disappearance

Turkish newspaper names 15 Saudis in case of missing reporter Saudi Arabia to let Turkey search consulate over missing journalist

Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist who had criticized the kingdom's royal family and exiled himself to the United States, entered the consulate in Turkey on October 2 and has not been seen outside it since, the Post reported.

The fiancée of a missing Saudi contributor to The Washington Post on Wednesday asked President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump to "help shed light" on his disappearance.

Saudi leaders, including the crown prince, insist Khashoggi left the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on his own, and they do not know what happened to him after that.

"Victims of the Arab world's authoritarian regimes seek leadership from the USA and DAWN intends to provide such leadership", the organization wrote in a statement listing its core principles.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said his country was anxious about Khashoggi's disappearance. It's also unclear if United States intelligence warned him in any way.

The apparent outing of members of the Saudi security services will add to growing worldwide pressure on the kingdom, which faces accusations from Turkey of having murdered and dismembered Mr Khashoggi when he went to the consulate on October 2.

Saudi Arabia's denials that it had any role in Khashoggi's disappearance have fallen on deaf ears in Congress, with almost a quarter of the Senate triggering a USA investigation into the case. Saudi Arabia may have agreed to the search in order to reassure its Western allies and the worldwide community. She accused Saudi Arabia of "state terrorism" and called on the global community to take action against the kingdom.

Turkey's Hurriyet newspaper and other media alleged Wednesday that the Saudi Consulate's 28 local staff were given leave on October 2 on grounds that a "diplomats' meeting" would be held there on that day.

If the allegations against the Saudi government are proven true, Connolly said, "the Saudis will have to account for themselves and they're going to pay a high price, I hope, for committing violence against an innocent who trusted a consulate was a safe haven in which to do business - not an abattoir".

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said national security adviser John Bolton and presidential senior adviser Jared Kushner spoke on Tuesday to Crown Prince Mohammed about Khashoggi.

"The premises are sovereign territory, but we will allow them to enter and search and do whatever they want to do".

The footage allegedly shows the men arriving at the airport and checking into a hotel, as well as a van arriving at the consul-general's residence, about 250 metres away from the consulate, two hours after Khashoggi entered the consulate.

Turkish media have identified 15 Saudis, including some officials, who made a mysterious one-day trip from Riyadh to Istanbul the day Khashoggi vanished at the consulate. "Although this incident could potentially fuel a political crisis between the two nations, let us not lose sight of the human aspect of what happened".

"Is it possible for there to be no camera systems at the Saudi Arabia consulate, where the event took place?", he said.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan's comments appear aimed at slowly intensifying the criticism while balancing the need to maintain the kingdom's investments in Turkey and relations on other issues. Meanwhile, a newspaper close to Erdogan published the names and photographs of 15 Saudi men whom it said were sent to Istanbul to kill Khashoggi.

Khashoggi was a former government adviser who fled Saudi Arabia in September 2017 and lived in the United States fearing arrest back home.

Turkish authorities have said he was killed by an elite Saudi "assassination squad". Secretary of State Mike Pompeo followed up with the crown prince afterward.

"Mohammed bin Salman is the mad king of Saudi Arabia, and Jamal Khashoggi is not his first or his last victim, " Ahmed told a crowd of more than three dozen spectators and journalists. "Right now, I don't think we're prepared to do that unless Congress tries to force the administration's hand because there is incontrovertible evidence that the Saudis kidnapped and or killed Jamal Khashoggi", Riedel added.
