Protests Demand Justice For Jamal Khashoggi | Multimedia

In his final column for The Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi perhaps presciently pleaded for greater freedom of expression in the Middle East Khashoggi: Donald Trump Says He Is 'Not Satisfied' With Saudi Account Of Journalist's Death

This new version of the events that led up to Khashoggi's death contradicts previous explanations from Saudi Arabia, which in a statement on Saturday said he had died in a fist-fight that broke out in the consulate. The denials became harder to maintain as the Turkish authorities leaked investigative details, many lurid, about the case to the local and global news media.

He said on Thursday he believes Mr Khashoggi is dead and that the USA response to Saudi Arabia will likely be "very severe" but that he wanted to get to the bottom of what happened. President Trump appeared to initially accept the Saudi explanation, but US lawmakers, intelligence officials and foreign policy experts quickly accused the government in Riyadh of a coverup.

"This was an operation that was a rogue operation, this was an operation where individuals ended up exceeding their authorities and responsibilities they had; they made a mistake when they killed Jamal Khashoggi in the consulate and they tried to cover up for it", he said. Two of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's close advisers were among those fired.

The Scottish government has abandoned plans to appoint an energy specialist to boost exports to Saudi Arabia.

Eighteen Saudi nationals had been arrested, the Saudi public prosecutor said in a statement. "This is an admission of guilt, but the Saudis still aren't coming clean with the truth", Sen.

Shadow global trade secretary Barry Gardiner said he thought the Government should suspend all arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia, the president said, "has been a great ally in the Middle East".

Trump tweeted that the Saudi Crown Prince "told me that he has already started, and will rapidly expand, a full and complete investigation into this matter".

He said the government supported an investigation into the killing.

Britain's defence secretary Gavin Williamson was among a number of global allies calling for clarity, and said it is "very important" the Saudis give a full explanation of the circumstances of Khashoggi's death.

"The explanations offered to date lack consistency and credibility", Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said in a statement Saturday. "This is not over".

The Saudi narrative of Khashoggi's death - that he was killed in a brawl following discussions with visiting officials in the consulate - contrasts with Turkish pro-government media reports that a Saudi hit squad, including an autopsy expert, travelled to Istanbul to kill Khashoggi and dispose of his body, which has not yet been found.

In a recent off-the-record interview published posthumously by United States magazine Newsweek, Khashoggi described the 33-year-old heir apparent as "an old-fashioned tribal leader", but said he would have accepted an offer to work as his adviser. "We want Jamal's murderers to be punished". Zeynep Karatas contributed from Istanbul.
