I wanted to reach through the fog of time and pull these men into the modern world, so they can regain their humanity once more - rather than be seen only as Charlie Chaplin-type figures in the vintage archive film'. Instead, the century-old film stills have been restored and colorized, with modern audio filing in the sensory gaps and, perhaps most interestingly of all, professional lip-readers weighing in on what they believe the soldiers' dialogue to be, along with actors lending their voices to the fearless members of this formerly black-and-white generation to bring them back to life.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson's latest labor of love, which he made for free, is the World War I documentary, They Shall Not Grow Old.

"It's not the story of the war", said Jackson.

"We're making a film [that is] not the usual film you would expect on the First World War".

"Not one soldier on the Western Front, I guarantee you, not one soldier could sit down and really explain in political terms what was important about fighting the war, what was important about beating the Germans".

"They Shall Not Grow Old" will simultaneously air in cinemas across the United Kingdom in the coming weeks.

He also noted that "every single frame was original film".

As well as being shown in cinemas, it will be given to all secondary schools.

Jackson will attend the premiere, which will be broadcast live, and will later attend a post-screening Q&A with film critic Mark Kermode.

It ends on October 21, with Laurel and Hardy film Stan And Ollie, starring Steve Coogan and John C Reilly and directed by Filth director Jon S Baird.

To make a documentary called They Shall Not Grow Old, Jackson was given hundreds of films by the museum which he has spent the last four years working on.
