A mother and her baby were left badly bruised after a violent hailstorm in Queensland, Australia.

South Burnett Mayor Keith Campbell says farmers who were about to hit harvest season have suffered very significant losses, with buildings in his area also damaged, and trees "shredded".

Simpson said she went into shock and her whole body felt numb when paramedics arrived, the Australian news site reported.

Fiona Simpson, 23, was driving in southern Queensland with her 78-year-old grandmother and 4-month-old daughter, Clara, on Thursday when the weather suddenly took a turn for the worse, the Australian Broadcasting Company (ABC) reports.

"I wasn't driving very fast because I couldn't see very well..."

Simpson waited out the rest of the hail storm by hiding her baby in the driver-side footwell, but the hail kept coming in.

Once the storm passed, Simpson drove her battered vehicle to a nearby home, where she screamed for help until the residents called an ambulance. Fearing for her child's safety Ms Simpson put her body on the line.

The rainstorm grew more and more severe, but Simpson told the outlet that the situation really got intense after one each of her car's front and back windows were smashed to pieces from the impacts of hailstones.

The storm didn't pass by quickly and it got so intense two of her auto windows were smashed in by the hail stones.

"I've learnt my lesson today, never drive in a hail storm!" she wrote. "I covered my infant with my body to stop her from getting badly injured".

"I know I'll be sore tomorrow, does anyone know of a cream or ointment that will help with the bruising?"

Simpson's grandmother had to spend the night in hospital due to the injuries she sustained during the storm, while Simpson's daughter escaped with only a minor bruise.

"I looked down and I could see she was screaming but I couldn't even hear her, that's how loud it was", Simpson told the station.
