A NY man is accused of manufacturing a bomb with the intention of detonating it on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on Election Day, U.S. Attorneys said Wednesday.

Rosenfeld "concocted a twisted plan to draw attention to his political ideology by killing himself on the National Mall", U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman said in a statement.

Rosenfeld adheres to an ideology called Sortition, which advocates that government officials should be selected by lottery rather than popular vote, according to the complaint.

Paul Rosenfeld of Tappan wanted to kill himself in order to bring attention to his "radical political beliefs", authorities said.

"Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation agents searched a Hudson Valley, New York, home Wednesday and arrested the 56-year-old man living there after learning about his alleged plan to build a bomb and blow himself up in Washington, D.C., on Election Day, two law enforcement officials told News 4 New York", writes NBC.

According to the criminal complaint, Rosenfeld sent letters and text messages in August and September to someone in Pennsylvania outlining his plan. "Rosenfeld's alleged plan for an Election Day detonation cut against our democratic principles".

Rosenfeld had previously constructed several smaller explosive devices for practice, according to the complaint.

Rosenfeld, 56, of Tappan, N.Y., was charged Wednesday in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of NY with unlawfully manufacturing a destructive device and with interstate transportation and receipt of an explosive, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. It was taken to a "safe location" in the county, officials said. A bomb discovered at Rosenfeld's home contained eight pounds of black powder but weighed 200 pounds, mostly due to components used to transport it, authorities add. Rosenfeld is also alleged to have made and tested other bombs "for practice", reports ABC News.

Inside the home, agents also found a fusing system for triggering explosive devices and what appeared to be empty canisters of black powder.

Rosenfeld had an initial court appearance before a magistrate at a federal courthouse in White Plains on Wednesday afternoon. If convicted of the charges against him, he could be looking at up to 20 years in prison.
