Lindsey Buckingham sues Fleetwood Mac over his firing from the band

Fleetwood Mac just kicked off its 50-city-plus North American tour without guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, and it wasn't because Buckingham didn't want to be there.

In the suit, he says "After 43 years of camaraderie and friendship, not a single member of the Band called [me] to break the news" of his firing.

Buckingham claims he had mistakenly assumed that Nicks was exiting the band and had emailed drummer Mick Fleetwood to instruct him how they could go on without her, but got no response. After the band refused, Buckingham delayed the solo project to accommodate a 60-date tour with the group.

The guitarist has now been replaced in the band by Mike Campbell from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Neil Finn.

It claims that the rest of the band's Rumours-era line-up - Stevie Nicks, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Christine McVie - wanted to start playing in August 2018, while Buckingham wanted to delay the shows until November, so he could release and tour a new solo album. Three days later, he discovered the band planned to tour without him. As much as I adore (and forever will) Lindsey and all his work with FM, I can't help but like what I'm hearing here. Fleetwood Mac has always been a creative evolution.

While Buckingham admitted he didn't remember Azoff's exact words, he said "that was the message". Buckingham, 69, accuses the other members of breaching their contract with the promoter Live Nation when they ousted him without warning after one performance in January.

"Less than a week after having shared a stage at Musicares, the other members of Fleetwood Mac had suddenly cut Buckingham off entirely", the lawsuit said. It's fairly standard legal procedure to service the complaint to the parties involved, something that neither Mr Buckingham nor his legal counsel have done.

A couple of days later he called Azoff, who told him Nicks gave the band an ultimatum: 'either Lindsey goes or I go'. Which makes one wonder what the true motivations are when servicing press first with a legal complaint before the parties in disputes.

In an interview earlier this week with Rolling Stone magazine, Buckingham blamed Nicks, his former girlfriend, for the rift, saying he was told by the band's manager that Nicks was angry when Buckingham smirked while she was giving a speech at the January Grammy event.

According to court documents obtained by Radar Online and Us Weekly, Buckingham claims the firing cost him between $12 to $14million.
