First appearing as a surprise addition in the end of the first "Fantastic Beasts" movie, fans have expressed concern over his role in the films as the villain Grindelwald after he was accused of physical and emotional abuse by ex-wife Amber Heard. It's like you're going down this maze and [J.K. Rowling] is weaving the stories together with such intricacy.

The first Fantastic Beasts film was a box office success and received mostly positive reviews from both critics and audiences. And EW has released a bunch of new photos. "The possibilities in that world are wide open, so you can really try anything", he said, talking about playing the character. So it was a gas and I look forward to the next installment'. "I loved it because that's really an arena where you can fly around and try different things and approach a character with a lot more...um...to take someone who is teetering on being a fascist, yeah he's a fascist, he's one of those, but to play him as a sensitive, concerned yet manipulative and powerful wizard". Despite the bitter proceedings, in August 2016, Heard withdrew her restraining order request, and the exes settled their divorce, saying in a joint statement, "Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love", adding, "Neither party has made false accusations for financial gains".

Elsewhere in the Collider interview, Depp notes the offer of the role "came out of nowhere" after someone had told him that Rowling wanted to talk to him.

It was awesome. It came out of nowhere. She doesn't take things lightly. 'The beauty of J.K. [Rowling] and of [director David] Yates is they put trust in me to a degree. So I jumped into locating the character and I had my ideas. Grindelwald is an interesting character. He's not a fun character; he's not amusing.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star then addressed the allegations directly. Feel free to peruse.

The trio of players set to rival the import of our Potter trio-Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander), Jude Law (Albus Dumbledore) and Johnny Depp (Gellert Grindelwald)-were sadly absent from that event, but we can't imagine they would miss the launch of the film, and a video clip announcing the premiere to French fans would seem to indicate they are headed that way.
