The main highlight is a new Home View, which you can see by swiping down on the display at any time. While video calls are useful, most people are pretty comfortable using their smartphone for all things communication-related. Thankfully, the Google Home Hub does with its white face, soft round edges, and woven fabric back. The smart display wars are only just starting, but choosing security and privacy over more features could ultimately serve Google well. Continuing with thin unobtrusive theme, Ambient EQ is a feature which uses a built-in light sensor to adjust the Hub screen's colors and brightness for different lighting throughout the day. It also has soft rounded corners, and is created to sit on a range of surfaces, such as the kitchen counter or nightstand, according to Google. So when the Home Hub was announced yesterday, it seemed weird that Google would give it the "Home" branding, but the display wasn't expected to be too different than the Smart Displays built by third-parties. Like those, it features Google Assistant.
There's also better integration with Google's Nest products. Being able to do that without holding your phone up is obviously a better experience - but it remains to be seen if it's something that would make shoppers pick one smart display over another.
So what does the Google Home Hub bring to the table compared to its hardware partner devices?
At the Google hardware event yesterday, the company officially launched the Google Home Hub. It sports a 7-inch touch screen, a speaker, and far-field microphone array to let you use Google Assistant. Indeed, Google will likely sell customers on the benefit of having multiple Hubs around the house. Plus, the device supports Google's Voice Match, so up to six people in your home can get their own personalised Mourning Routine. And that's exactly what the Google Home Hub is all about.
What I don't believe they'll get is the new Live Albums which merges Google's smart search with Google Photos. Google Photos automatically adds new photos, avoiding duplicates and blurry shots, and you can share your live album, so when that person sets up their Home Hub, they'll see your album. Plus, you can just say to Home Hub, "Hey Google, show my pictures from LA", and voila!
Google opted to leave off the camera for this one, and I'm not sure how to feel about it. And, when it's time for bed, it'll dim the screen.
One of our favourite features is the easily accessible smart home controls menu. For example, you may see "living room lights on and front door locked" as your status, with a breakdown of your smart devices below it, allowing you to manipulate them directly from the Google Home Hub.
We will hopefully know the answers to these questions before Google ships the Home Hub near the end of this month.
It costs $149 in the United States (£13 in the UK) from Google Store. A particular strength of the Google Home Hub is its YouTube handling, especially since Google has purposely hobbled the Amazon Echo Show's handing of this app.

The nod to privacy concerns comes as Google and other big USA tech companies try to bounce back from recent data breach scandals. The move does however point to the tech industry's growing certainty that home hubs represent a huge market opportunity.
