Stout urged another 300,000 customers in the Okanagan and southeastern British Columbia., to conserve even though their natural gas comes from Alberta.

No one was hurt when the fireball lit up the sky near the community of Shelley, and forced about 100 members of the nearby Lheidli T'enneh First Nation from their homes. There were no reports of injuries.

"We'll also be working with the regulators of our pipeline to determine what was the cause of this event and it will be a very detailed process, they will look at the pipe itself, analyze the pipe along with any other factors", said Michael Barnes, Enbridge Spokesperson.

Doug Stout, Fortis BC vice-president of external relations, said Wednesday that 85 per cent of the gas his company feeds to homes and businesses is carried by the twinned pipeline that runs from northern B.C.to the United States border south of Vancouver.

Residents within several kilometres were evacuated as a precaution, but the evacuation zone has since been reduced to one kilometre.

It will work closely with the Transportation Safety Board, which is responsible for investigating the incident, Neufeld said.

"Our local gas system is safe and was not damaged by the pipeline failure", it said. Witnesses say they can not see smoke or flames anymore.

A pipeline explosion has been confirmed to be the reason for a large fire outside of Prince George.

The Enbridge natural gas pipeline that exploded Tuesday evening is a feeder for the province-wide gas distribution system and, because of this, FortisBC says it anticipates decreased energy flow and potential loss of service.

"I thought it might have been a jet engine or a low-flying jet", Terry Teegee said of the noise.

"Enbridge emergency crews have responded, have isolated and are now depressurizing two natural gas transmission lines in the vicinity to contain the incident", he said.

They say the cause is still under investigation.

(Original Story) - A pipeline has ruptured and sparked a massive fire north of Prince George, B.C.

The provincial Ministry of Environment says it has been notified of the incident and that the 900 PSI gas line is operated by Enbridge.

"We don't know what caused this explosion yet but once we do know, no doubt there will be some lessons to be learned and we will be implementing those as regulators".

The City of Prince George has set up an emergency centre due to the fire.

Castanet will have more information as soon as it become available.
