Commenting on the Irish backstop, Barnier said the EU's plan to keep Northern Ireland in the Single Market and customs union would help keep the border invisible - a goal of both sets of negotiators.

The only other option they have offered the United Kingdom is to keep Northern Ireland in the customs union and divide the United Kingdom with checks in the Irish Sea - something the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) has roundly rejected.

Her proposals are reported to involve Britain remaining part of the customs union on an indefinite basis, meaning EU rules and regulations will continue to apply.

She reportedly pitched her solution to the Northern Ireland "backstop", a major sticking point in the negotiations that has bitterly divided her party and caused friction with the EU. "That's not what the biggest majority in our history voted for".

Mrs Foster's latest shot across the bows came after the party had earlier made clear that it would be prepared to vote against the Budget and other domestic legislation if Mrs May crossed their "red lines".

Following three days of talks with key figures in Brussels, DUP leader Arlene Foster said Mrs May could not in "good conscience" accept the proposals now on the table from the European Union.

But Cabinet sources said senior ministers were expected to consider the backstop plan when they met this afternoon with a view to getting the backing of the full Cabinet next Tuesday.

The prime minister briefed ministers on negotiations yesterday amid speculation that the government is moving closer to a deal with Brussels. Michael Russell will be there representing the Scottish Government and is expected to once again sound the alarm about the damage to Scotland's economy a hard or no-deal Brexit would do.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, leader of the influential European Research Group of Brexiteer MPs, said: "It is worth remembering that income tax was introduced as a temporary measure".

He warned the UK's trade proposals would give its companies a "huge competitive edge" over European Union rivals. "An agreement is within reach", he said. "That is why we are interested in maximising an orderly withdrawal and minimising the cost of withdrawal".
