Tourists and locals said they were woken by the magnitude-6 quake, the latest in a series to strike the country.

A magnitude 6.0 natural disaster has struck just off the coast of Indonesia, a country reeling from an quake and tsunami last month that killed more than 2,000 people.

The victims in East Java's Sumenep district perished after being crushed by collapsed buildings, national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

The epicentre was off the coast, north north-east of Sumberanyar, according to the United States Geological Survey.

"Wow, that was really strong and it lasted a long time", said a woman named Davy who took refuge in the parking lot of a Bali hotel, several kilometers from where the International Monetary Fund and World Bank are holding their annual meetings this week. He added that the damage from the quake was minor.

Finance Minister Asad Umar later had a meeting with World Bank President Dr Jim Yong Kim.

Over 15,000 delegates from 189 countries are now gathered at Bali, Indonesia, for IMF/WB Group annual meetings from October 10-14, 2018.

Tremors were felt on the holiday island of Bali in the capital city of Denpasar. People on the island were reported to have briefly panicked and fled their homes.

Dwikorita Karnawati, the head of Indonesia's geophysics agency who was also in Nusa Dua for the International Monetary Fund summit, said no tsunami warning was issued. Almost 2,000 people were killed in the disaster, as rescue workers had to dig through mud, rubble, and debris for dead bodies using their bare hands.

Several homes were also lost in Thursday's quake, which affected parts of Bali and East Java.

A string of earthquakes in Lombok in eastern Indonesia killed more than 550 people over the summer.

Indonesia is situated in the Ring of Fire, an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.

The island also remains under a volcano watch as Mount Agung there continues to be active.
