The British Foreign Office said it is "urgently seeking updates" from local authorities after reports that two Britons were among those killed.

The couple, who were in their 70s, are said to have died along with cab driver Juan Sillero when the auto was swept away by a torrent of water near the coastal resort of S'Illot.

Piles of rubbish and wrecked furniture cluttered the streets in Sant Llorenc des Cardassar, one of the worst-hit villages, while locals with the aid of volunteers used mops to clean up the water flooding their homes.

A five-year-old boy who disappeared with his mother remains missing.

Some parts of the island received up to 23 centimeters (nine inches) of rainfall in around four hours on Tuesday evening, national weather authorities reported.

"It all happened in less than 10 minutes", a witness told Spanish TV.

Sant Llorenc, which is about 60 kilometers (40 miles) east of Mallorca's capital, Palma, is where a dry creek overflowed amid heavy downpours, creating a strong current of water and mud that buried cars and tore trees along the way, according to witness accounts.

A British couple were among ten people killed as flash flooding turned streets in Mallorca into torrents and left hundreds homeless.

Rescue workers reportedly found the vehicle submerged and on its side at the mouth of the torrent in S'Illot at 2am (1am BST) on Wednesday.

The UK Foreign Office is supporting families of two British people who are among those to have died.

Former municipal mayor Rafel Gili Sastre, 71 was later found dead at his home, the paper said.

Around 80 soldiers and seven vehicles from the military's emergency unit were brought in to join more than 100 rescuers deployed in the area on Wednesday.

Spanish tennis star Rafael Nadal, who is from Mallorca, helped residents clear mud from their houses in Sant Llorenc.

Nadal invited people affected by the storms to take shelter at his tennis academy before getting out there and helping himself.
