New York State gained a high-profile registered Democrat on Tuesday: Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg re-registered with the party, a key move in what could be a 2020 bid for president as a Democrat.

The change in party affiliation comes after Bloomberg chose to spend millions in the 2018 election to help elect Democrats.

Bloomberg posted a photo on Instagram along with an announcement that he has re-registered as a Democrat.

Bloomberg has drifted between political parties throughout his life - going from Democrat to Republican to independent to, now, Democrat again.

"At key points in USA history, one of the two parties has served as a bulwark against those who threaten our Constitution".

Last week, Bloomberg announced he would give $20 million to the main Democratic Senate super PAC.

Mike Bloomberg announced Wednesday that he is changing his voter registration to Democrat - a possible signal that he's weighing a presidential run in 2020.

"It's impossible to conceive that I could run as a Republican - things like choice, so numerous issues, I'm just way away from where the Republican Party is today", Bloomberg said last month.

He has said he would make a decision on the presidency after the midterm elections. He officially left the Republican Party in 2007.

In June, Bloomberg reportedly said at a fundraiser that he's "revving up" for 2020.

He has entertained the idea of a presidential run before but never generated enough traction to establish himself as the kind of outsize political force his fellow NY billionaire has become. He endorsed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election and was a vocal critic of Trump.
