At least eight climbers killed on Nepal peak

Heavy snowstorm and landslide buried the base camp Nine climbers feared dead in Himalayas after storm at Mt Gurja

Tourism Ministry official Rameshwar Niraula said the storm struck the group at the base camp of Mount Gurja, a mountain of 7,913 meters, on Saturday.

Thapa, the police spokesman, said weather conditions on the mountain were preventing search-and-rescue efforts.

A rescue helicopter at the scene confirmed seeing eight bodies in the ruins of the camp, but was unable to stay due to bad conditions.

"Our rescue operation is continuing and we are trying to find details", he told Reuters without identifying the missing.

The previous year, 16 Sherpas were killed on Everest when an avalanche swept through the Khumbu Icefall.

Nepal is home to 8 of the world's 14 highest mountains including Mount Everest, and the autumn climbing season is now at its peak.

A police team heading toward the base camp on foot is unlikely to reach the site until Sunday.

"After they (the climbers) were out of contact since yesterday we sent people from the village and a helicopter to search for them", he said.

Kim Chang-ho, the fastest person to climb the world's 14 highest mountains without using supplemental oxygen, is among the dead.

Nine climbers are feared dead after a violent snowstorm destroyed their camp on a Himalayan peak in western Nepal.

Mount Gurja, also called Gurja Himal, while not famous as one of Nepal's most challenging peaks, is part of the Dhaulagiri range, which is topped by Dhaulagiri I, the seventh-highest mountain in the world.

The climbing permit listed four South Korean climbers, but a fifth member had joined the team later, according to Suresh Dakal of Trekking Camp Nepal.
