Astronauts escape malfunctioning Soyuz rocket

Russian Soyuz rocket suffers failure on launch, set to return back to Earth New Station Crew Less Than A Day From Launching to Station

A little more than an hour after launch, Dmitry Rogozin, chief of Roscosmos, the Russian space program, said on Twitter that the crew had been rescued.

U.S. astronaut Nick Hague, right, and Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin, crew members of the mission to the International Space Station wave as they board the rocket prior to the launch.

Thursday's failure was the first manned launch failure for the Russian space program since September 1983 when a Soyuz exploded on the launch pad. He added that Russian Federation will fully share all relevant information with the U.S.

Russian Federation has continued to rely on Soviet-designed booster rockets for launching commercial satellites, as well as crews and cargo to the International Space Station.

Booster rockets carrying a Soyuz spacecraft with a Russian and a US astronaut on board headed for the International Space Station failed mid-air on Thursday, forcing the crew to make an emergency landing, Russian news agencies reported. Shortly after launch, there was an anomaly with the booster and the launch ascent was aborted, resulting in a ballistic landing of the spacecraft.

The crew "report they are in good condition", NASA said. They will be transported to the Gargarin Cosmonaut Center in Star City, Russia outside Moscow.

"We have plenty of supplies on board the station to support the crew and they're going to continue to do work", NASA spokesperson Kelly Humphries told Space.com. A thorough investigation into the cause of the incident will be conducted.

NASA says that two astronauts from the USA and Russian Federation are in good condition after an emergency landing following booster rocket failure minutes after the launch.

NASA has been dependent on Russia's crewed Soyuz spacecraft and rockets to fly astronuats to and from the space station since the agency retired its space shuttle fleet in 2011.

"Teams are working with our Russian partners to obtain more information about the issue with the booster from today's launch", the agency said. Search and rescue crews are getting ready to reach the expected landing site. "Search and rescue crews are always pre-staged in the event something like this does happen", Dean added.

A Russian rocket carrying an American and a Russian to the International Space Station failed on launch Thursday, forcing the astronaut and cosmonaut to careen back to Earth in a dramatic emergency landing.

But the consequences of the failed launch will ripple through the space station's activities.

The incident comes as the USA has been making progress in its quest to end Russia's monopoly on manned flights to the ISS by encouraging private companies to conduct launches. Hague and Ovchinin would have joined Expedition 57 Commander Alexander Gerst, NASA Flight Engineer Serena Aunon-Chancellor and Roscosmos Flight Engineer Sergey Prokopyev at the space station. Robotic cargo launches using US -built resupply ships are also scheduled to deliver more supplies to the station in the next two months.
