Construction workers made a gruesome discovery on Friday evening as they worked to transform a funeral home into a community center: the bodies of 11 infants hidden in the ceiling.

The bodies of 11 infants were discovered at the shuttered Cantrell Funeral Home in Detroit on Friday, Oct. 12, 2018.

WDIV said that Detroit police have ordered an entire building search to ensure there are no additional bodies inside.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner will take custody of the remains.

U.S. inspectors made the grim discovery of 11 corpses on Friday at the Cantrell Funeral Home on Michigan's east side, according to the state's Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs spokesman Jason Moon. "We then immediately contacted local authorities".

Michigan's Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs suspended the license of the funeral home in April after inspectors found decomposing embalmed bodies. That suspension order remains in effect as does our investigation.

Michigan State Police were called to the scene and continue to investigate.

The former funeral home located on Mack, was closed in April for deplorable conditions that included decomposing and moldy bodies.

During a popup inspection during that time frame inspectors found 20 bodies, seven were in caskets, three were in cremation containers, and 10 were just lying on tables. The bodies had been reportedly decomposing for months.
