A sobering study: 30% of young adults are shunning booze
The study supports other research that has found that young Britons are turning their backs on alcohol

The study of 10,000 people in the United Kingdom, published this month and comparing 2005 to 2015, says that abstaining from alcohol has become more "mainstream" behaviour for young people.
The team at University College London analyzed data on nearly 10,000 young people who had been interviewed about their drinking habits in the annual Health Survey for England between 2005 and 2015.
The study concluded that young adults today were drinking less than their parents did but alcohol consumption rates failed to decline among smokers, those with mental health conditions and also among certain ethnic minorities.
The researchers said it was "difficult to pinpoint a single factor" behind the trends, but suggested that increased awareness of the dangers of alcohol and tougher laws on its sale to minors may have contributed.
The research by University College London said abstaining from alcohol was becoming more mainstream among young people, with an increase in the proportion of 16 to 24 years olds in England shunning alcohol completely.
Young people are increasingly turning their backs on booze - with nearly a third teetotal, according to a shock new study.
Half had not drunk in the past week, up from 35 per cent in 2005.
Increased research around alcohol's impact on health and wellbeing could also be a factor in the trend, as the age group becomes more health conscious.
"Increases in non-drinking among young people were found across a broad range of groups, including those living in northern or southern regions of England, among the white population, those in full-time education, in employment and across all social classes and healthier groups", Dr. Ng Fat explains.
Along with an increase in non-drinking, we found the number of 16-24 year olds engaging in periodic abstinence increased from one in three not drinking in the past week in 2005, to one in two in 2015.
In the past, non-drinkers were relatively rare and treated with suspicion, but now the practice is now found across various segments of society and becoming "more mainstream", the journal said. Binge drinking too declined from 27 percent to 18 percent over these 10 years.
With girls, 43.1% in England drank alcohol weekly in 2002, falling to fewer than one in 10 (8.9%) in 2014.
Researchers found young people in England aren't just drinking less alcohol, more are never taking up drinking at all.
