It diminished from hurricane force as it came ashore, but forecasters said the 350-mile-wide storm's slow progress across North and SC could leave much of the region under water in the coming days.

At 11am yesterday, the hurricane centre said Florence had maximum sustained winds near 75kph and continued to produce catastrophic flooding in the Carolinas.

"This is a hurricane event followed by a flood event", said South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster.

"The fact is this storm is deadly and we know we are days away from an ending", Gov Cooper said.

"Remember: Most storm deaths occur from drowning in fresh water, often in cars", Gov. Cooper said.

"Please be safe and be smart and use your common sense", Cooper added.
