As Hurricane Florence, a risky Category 2 storm, continues on its path toward the East Coast, surf cameras are showing the live impact the storm is having on the Carolinas.

She is now one of a glut of tropical storms in the Atlantic, with Florence sparking mass evacuations as she heads towards landfall in the U.S. states of North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

This is when Hurricane Florence is expected to be closest to us.

Hurricane-force winds now extend up to 80 miles and tropical-storm-force winds extend up to 195 miles from the center of the storm. "Life-threatening storm surge flooding, catastrophic flash flooding and prolonged significant river flooding are still expected".

The center of Florence will approach the coasts of North and SC on Thursday, then move near or over the coast of southern North Carolina and eastern SC on Thursday night and Friday, the NHC added.

Up to 40 inches of rain could fall in North Carolina.

Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa said he hoped the effects of the storm would be limited.

When staffers realized a nearby Bojangles would stay open, NBC's Matt Bradley says, they opened back up. "The power is going to go out". It could go out for a number of days, it could go out for weeks. "It's very hard to say at this point". "Don't play games with it". President Donald Trump declared a state of emergency on the federal level Tuesday for the Carolinas and Virginia.

With recent official reports finding that last year's Hurricane Maria claimed almost 3,000 lives in Puerto Rico-an assertion that re-emerged onto the national spotlight Thursday after President Donald Trump, without providing evidence, alleged that those estimates were artificially inflated and politically motivated-it's worth exploring what it is that ultimately kills people, including the most vulnerable, when a hurricane strikes.

Some airports are already closed, others may cease operations Thursday, and American and other airlines are moving their planes to higher and drier ground.

Leventhal previously reported that officials will be closing the bridge that carries US Highway 74 from mainland New Hanover County onto the beach.

"Typically, we see a stimulus effect that creates jobs and raises incomes for South Carolinians", said Joseph Von Nessen, a research economist at the University of SC.

The path of Hurricane Florence could affect the homes of more than 5 million people, and more than 1 million of them have been ordered to evacuate. And up to 3 million energy customers in North and SC could lose power for weeks.

The hurricane is also predicted to pass directly over two nuclear power plants in North Carolina, the Brunswick nuclear plant 30 miles south of Wilmington and the Shearon Harris nuclear plant in New Hill, a town farther inland. They also instituted a 24-hour curfew.

North Carolina had 108 shelters open, and SC reported having 56 shelters open on Thursday morning, as the storm headed toward the coast.

Isaac is expected to reach the islands, which remain under a tropical storm warning, by Thursday afternoon and cross the Caribbean through Saturday.
