Three States now affected by needles in strawberries

'If in doubt, throw them out': Needles in strawberries prompt warning Contaminated strawberries, Queensland – update 1 - Queensland Police News
Priscilla Morrison | 16 September, 2018, 14:24

All punnets have been recalled. Supt. Lawrence said "we're not agreeing with that at this particular point of time".

While the brands behind the initial incident were taken from shelves, authorities said the affected punnets would have expired, but people should check their fridges and freezers for stored strawberries and dispose of them.

"If you are in doubt, just throw them out".

"We are now working with retailers nationwide to ensure that all Donnybrook stock is removed from sale", Dr Young said.

"Luckily, in each of those cases, the needles were found within the strawberry by the person who had purchased them when cutting the strawberries, as we had asked them to do", he said.

Gane posted the ordeal to Facebook, along with a picture that shows a metal pin poking out of a strawberry.

She added there was no reason to stop eating strawberries but the public needed to be aware of the incident.

Angela said both she and Aaron were shocked, but thankful that Mason and Koby-Rose were not injured.

Coles said they had been in contact with Ms Faugeras.

Queensland Police Service, who have launched an investigation into the potentially hazardous findings, revealed that affected brands include "Berry Obsession" and "Berry Licious", according to an update on the agency's Facebook account.

"Police have liaised with retailers to ensure that all stock is removed from sale", police said.

"As the products have yet to be forensically examined, it is unknown if the contamination is related to the original Queensland incident or a copycat".

Sewing needles have been found in a number of punnets of strawberries purchased from Woolworths stores in Queensland and Victoria.

Dr Young said any strawberries bought from September 13 onwards, or that customers are certain are not the brands Berrylicious and Berry Obsession, are safe.

Only weeks ago, some supermarkets dropped the price of strawberries as low as $1 per punnet to help suppliers move tonnes of excess produce.

The first incidence was reported on Sunday, with several more cases confirmed on Wednesday morning.

"I found the other half of the needle in the strawberry".

But Queensland chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young said just be ultra-cautious before eating them, no matter where you buy them from.

"People are contacting us out of concern and saying: 'This is what I've got, what do you think?'", he said.

There are other reports out there, but they're still being chased up.

Police have released a photo in relation to the suspected copycat incident and continue to investigate it.

The Queensland Strawberry Growers Association suspects a former staff member is behind the contamination. "We're keeping a very open mind as to where this may have occurred".

Meanwhile, a NSW mother revealed her ten-year-old child discovered sabotaged fruit in a case yet unconfirmed by police.
