Sen. Feinstein Defends Handling of Kavanaugh Allegations: ‘Critical’ to Protect Victim’s Identity

Senate Committee Delays Kavanaugh Vote Until 9/20 Anita Hill Calls for an Investigation into the Allegation of Sexual Abuse Against Brett Kavanaugh

HBO host Bill Maher said Friday that while he thought Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh was a "suck-up", he thought Democrats' latest attack on him was counterproductive.

According to media reports, a woman sent a letter to Democrats alleging sexual misconduct on the part of Kavanaugh while he was in high school.

"I categorically and unequivocally deny this allegation".

"Now, they're coming at him with this accusation from someone anonymous that he was at a party, which I find hard to believe", Maher quipped. "That was true when he was in high school, and it has remained true to this day", the letter states.

The show of support for Kavanaugh was organized by his former law clerks. Judge Kavanaugh submitted a questionnaire of over 17,000 pages, participated in two full days of public Senate hearings as well as a private session to discuss his background, and then he answered an additional 1,200 follow-up questions.

The swift pushback comes after the committee's top Democrat, Dianne Feinstein of California, notified federal investigators about information she received on the nominee.

The letter apparently has been in the custody of Judiciary Committee member Sen. If approved by the committee and the whole Senate, as expected, Kavanaugh is likely to decidedly tilt the court to the conservatives for years to come.

NPR has not independently confirmed the contents of the letter, which the woman sent to her representative, Rep. Anna Eshoo, D-Calif., after Kavanaugh was nominated to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. One activist group favoring abortion choice, NARAL, called on Kavanaugh to withdraw from consideration. The letter was also shared with Feinstein in July.

The FBI confirmed it had received the information "on the night of September 12".

On Thursday, Grassley told reporters he had not seen the letter.

He went on: "All I know is what I read and I wouldn't make any judgment of it until I had more information".

"There's no plan to change the committee's consideration of Judge Kavanaugh's nomination", Hartmann said in a statement.

The White House called Feinstein's move an "11th hour attempt to delay his confirmation".

Shortly after Feinstein's statement was released, White House spokesperson Kerri Kupec criticized the timing. Not until the eve of his confirmation has Sen.

"Throughout 25 years of public service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has thoroughly and repeatedly vetted Judge Kavanaugh, dating back to 1993, for some of the most highly sensitive roles".
