Wellfleet Police Lt Michael Hurley confirmed the victim, a man in his mid-20s, died of his injuries following the attack, the first fatal shark incident in MA since 1936.

The shark struck in waters around 300 yards off Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet at 2:25pm local time (7.:25pm GMT) on Saturday.

He was pulled from the water, given first aid and taken to Cape Cod Hospital, where he later died, according to the Wellfleet Police Department.

"We have Troopers from our Cape and Islands Detective Unit and our Crime Scene Services unit investigating along with Wellfleet Police", he told the Herald today.

"The town beaches are closed to swimming for the next 24 hours", the police said.

The attack is the first fatal shark attack in MA since 1936, and the second shark attack this season.

The man's death Saturday comes exactly a month after an August 15 shark attack off Cape Cod.

He sustained severe injuries to his legs and is still recovering in hospital. He described how the late victim kicked something behind him, before a tale emerged from the water.

Visitors to Newcomb Hollow Beach are greeted by a sign warning them to "Be Shark Smart". Booth said. "It was like right out of that movie Jaws". "Right spot, wrong time, I guess".

He is the state's first shark attack fatality in more than 80 years.

The victim was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital by ambulance but did not survive. Great White Sharks are predators and should be considered unsafe.

Gavin Naylor, the director of the program, told CNN that such attacks are "very rare" and that "shark attacks in the summer are a direct outcome of more people and more animals in the water".
