Israel must compensate for Khan al-Ahmar — European Parliament

Israeli forces prepare for razing the West Bank Palestinian village Israeli forces prepare for razing the West Bank Palestinian village

Opponents of the demolition argue that it is part of an effort to enable the expansion of the nearby settlement of Kfar Adumim and to create a region of contiguous Israeli control from Jerusalem nearly to the Dead Sea, a move critics say will bisect the West Bank, making a contiguous Palestinian state impossible. Israel places severe restrictions on Palestinian development there and home demolitions are not unusual.

As part of interim peace deals in the 1990s, the West Bank was carved up into autonomous and semi-autonomous Palestinian areas, known as Areas A and B, and Area C, which is home to some 400,000 Israeli settlers. It has offered to resettle the residents 12 kilometres (7 miles) away under what it says are improved conditions - with connections to water, electricity and sewage treatment they now don't have.

The community in Al-Khan Al-Ahmar is one of the 46 Bedouin communities in the central West Bank that the United Nations considers at risk of forcible transfer.

The newly-built protest huts are near Khan Al Ahmar, a Bedouin village which has become a focus of Palestinian protests and global concern.

"Israel bears full responsibility for providing the necessary services, including education, healthcare and welfare, for the people living under its occupation, in line with the Fourth Geneva Convention", the resolution stated.

"The demolition of Khan al-Ahmar and the forcible transfer of its residents would constitute a grave breach of global humanitarian law", the resolution stated.

Israeli forces on Thursday dismantled five corrugated metal shacks that had been set up by Palestinian activists protesting the anticipated razing of a nearby West Bank hamlet.

Since the court ruling came out, the Palestinians have declared not to make new appeal to Israeli courts, but will sue Israel at the International Criminal Court if the village is demolished and start open solidarity movements in the community.

According to the statement, France is continuing its efforts to preserve the two-state solution in collaboration with the European Union and its close worldwide partners. They were not being used by local residents, according to Ha'aretz.

Assaf stressed on the importance of the presence of residents in the village to protect their homes and lands from being taken by Israel as part of a plan for the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements. Security forces were deployed to the village and construction workers began paving an access road that would facilitate the demolition and evacuation.

Israeli authorities have offered alternative sites for Khan Al-Ahmar residents, but villagers say the first was near a rubbish dump and the latest close to a sewage treatment plant.

On September 5, Israel's supreme court upheld an order to raze the village on grounds that it was built without the proper permits. Israel says Khan al-Ahmar was illegally built and in an unsafe location near a major highway.
