Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al Abadi looks increasingly unlikely to secure a second term as former allies and leading figures blame him for the fallout from violent protests in Basra.

Last Friday, an angry mob torched the consulate in Basra as well as a number of government buildings amid growing unrest in the province over high unemployment and poor public services.

According to the Iraqi constitution, after electing speaker and two deputies, the parliament should elect a president of the country who will ask the largest alliance to form a government within 30 days. "But I'm calling upon the political parties to control their political disputes and not allow them to extend to the streets", Abadi added.

The Parliament is to elect a new speaker on Saturday.

It also comes on the heels of an emergency meeting in parliament at the weekend that threw Abadi's ability to hold onto his role into question, as the top two parliamentary blocs call on him to step down over the crisis in Basra.

"Then the nomination of the candidate of the biggest bloc for the prime minister post away from the political party quotas and to agree on the government programme that we have submitted that guarantees the benefits of the security and economic achievements of our government".

The populist cleric's supporters won the most seats in national elections held earlier this year, but Iraq's feuding factions have yet to form a new government.

Abadi said the government had made a decision to increase the salaries of fighters' in the powerful pro-Tehran Hashd al-Shaabi paramilitary force, and make wages "equal to that of the armed forces".

Sadr has distanced himself from Abadi, a one-time ally.

This is bad news for Iraqi PM Hayder Abadi, who despite having formed a coalition deal with Sadr, is seen as far too weak to be seriously considered for another term as premier. The results of the vote will give a concrete indication as to which bloc will be able to form the future cabinet.
