The National Hurricane Center's best guess was that Florence's eye would blow ashore as early as Friday afternoon around the North Carolina-South Carolina line. Wind gusts from Florence could reach tropical storm force (39+ mph), while sustained winds are expected to be in the 20-30 miles per hour range.

Myrtle Beach International Airport in SC has also suspended commercial operations, and urges passengers to check with their airlines - not the airport - about upcoming itineraries. Workers are being brought in from the Midwest and Florida to help in the storm's aftermath, it said.

Trinidadians living overseas are vigorously preparing themselves for the hurricane.

"The forecast shows a storm surge higher than many homes", North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said.

A surge is also likely along portions of the SC coast.

Meanwhile, winds and rain were expected to arrive later in SC, and a few people were still walking on the sand at Myrtle Beach while North Carolina was getting pounded.

Winds of up to 110km/h are also expected for several days as the weather system slowly grinds over.

Businesses across the Carolinas, Virginia and Georgia will likely suffer financial losses from the approaching storm, with ports closing, farmers moving their livestock and expected power outages that could last for weeks. At nine feet of storm surge flooding - expected in parts of North Carolina such as Newport - the only way to survive is to move up to a higher level until the flooding passes.

The Charlotte area will likely begin to feel some tropical storm force winds and gusts from Florence late Thursday night as the outer bands make their way farther inland.

"This will have a storm surge in the 20-foot range", Myers said.

A hurricane warning is in effect for a big chunk of the Carolina coast, from the South Santee River below Myrtle Beach, S.C., to Duck, N.C. - part of the Outer Banks. Then it is likely to hover along the coast Saturday, pushing up to 4m of storm surge and unloading water on both states.

About 5.25 million people live in areas under hurricane warnings or watches, and 4.9 million more live in places covered by tropical storm warnings or watches, the National Weather Service said. The rainfall will produce life-threatening flash flooding in Virginia and the Carolinas.

The centre urges people within the affected areas to take all necessary actions to protect life and property from rising water and the potential for other risky conditions. "Residents in the path of these devastating storms should comply with all evacuation orders and other emergency instructions".

Hurricane Florence is bigger than the state of North Carolina and four times larger than Ohio.

This same zone will be hammered by winds gusting up to hurricane force for almost a day while tropical-storm conditions could linger twice that long.

"This is a hurricane event followed by a flood event", said South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster.
