Even High-Fat Dairy Might Be Good for You

In the study they explain that general dietary guidelines recommend minimizing intake of whole-fat dairy because it adversely affects blood lipids.

In an analysis restricted to individuals who consumed only high-fat dairy products, two servings per day versus less than 0.5 servings per day was associated with a 29% reduction in the primary composite endpoint, a 25% reduction in total mortality, and a 32% reduction in major cardiovascular disease.

The study draws on data collected from PURE, a large-scale research project that tracked more than 130,000 people from 21 countries across five continents for nine years.

Compared with those who ate less than half-a-serving daily, people who had three servings a day of whole-fat dairy had lower rates of death (4.4 percent versus 3.3 percent, respectively) and heart disease (5 percent versus 3.7 percent) during the study.

Contrary to popular belief, consumption of around three servings a day of whole fat diary is associated with lower rates of cardiovascular disease and mortality.

High-fat dairy could be good for you and heart-healthy, new research suggests. They recorded their dairy product intake between 2003 and 2018. The high intake group also had a lower rate of stroke (1.2% vs 2.9%) and death (3.4% vs 5.6%) than the no dairy group. The findings were similar but not significant for people who ate both full-fat and low-fat dairy.

Many health-conscious Britons automatically opt for fat-free or low-fat dairy options when it comes to products such as milk and yoghurt in hopes of helping to prevent cardiovascular disease - the number one cause of death worldwide.

When compared with those no consuming milk, the high intake group had lower rates in four categories - total mortality of 3.4 percent vs. 5.6 percent, non-cardiovascular mortality of 2.5 percent vs. 4 percent, cardiovascular mortality of 0.9 percent vs. 1.6 percent, major cardiovascular disease of 3.5 percent vs. 4.9 percent and stroke of 1.2 percent vs. 2.9 percent.

In other words, it looks like eating full-fat dairy - which in this case includes yogurt, cheese, and milk - is more beneficial for you than not.

"Currently with the evidence that we have reviewed, we still believe that you should try to limit your saturated fat including fat that this is coming from dairy products", commented Jo Ann Carson, PhD, of UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and a spokesperson for the American Heart Association. The recommendation to consume low-fat dairy is based on the presumed harms of saturated fats on a single cardiovascular risk marker. "The risk of stroke was markedly lower with higher consumption of dairy".

"Diet is one of the most important modifiable risk factors of chronic disease", lead author Dr Mahshid Dehghan, a senior research associate at McMaster University, said. "Last year, we published results from PURE showing that saturated fat was inversely associated with mortality".

But evidence suggests that some saturated fats may be beneficial to cardiovascular health, and dairy products may also contain other potentially beneficial compounds, including specific amino acids, unsaturated fats, vitamin K1 and K2, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and potentially probiotics.

That said, people should stick to low-fat dairy, she advised. "Three servings is moderate consumption, and moderate consumption is beneficial". Moreover, they suggest that follow-up of 9 years is relatively short, particularly given that entry criteria for the study included those as young as 35 years old, most of whom would have been quite healthy at the time of enrollment. "However, ideally our findings require confirmation in randomized trials evaluating the effects of increasing dairy consumption on BP, glucose, and clinical outcomes", Dehghan added.
