The rest only had minor injuries.

There were at least seven people injured in the rockfall, but according to coastguard officials, none of them received life-threatening injuries.

The landslide occurred Thursday on the Navagio Beach, or Shipwreck Beach, on the northwestern coast of the island.

Video footage uploaded on the website of Greek newspaper Proto Thema showed bathers running in panic as a large part of a cliff peeled off the rockwall and tumbled down at a point close to the sandy shore.

He said: "The rock that fell would be like a four-storey building falling on to the beach".

Witnesses on the beach said there were three boats with passengers in the area during the landslide. O'Connell described the chaos, with families scrambling to rush to safety on the boats in the bay.

"The water hit my feet with such force that it knocked me on to my back and covered over half of the beach". Meanwhile, some boats were capsizing in the strong waves.

An air and sea search was conducted as a precaution in case there was anyone trapped under the rocks.

The beach, also known as "shipwreck beach", is popular with tourists and can be reached only by boat.

British woman Wendy Thorpe said she was on a boat with her daughter when the cliff collapsed and there was an "almighty crash".
