Cholera outbreaks have occurred regularly in Zimbabwe's cities where supplies of potable water and sanitation facilities are scarce.

Cholera, which can kill within hours if untreated, is caused by the consumption of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae.

Itai Rusike, the director of the Community Working Group on Health (CWGH) told the Daily News yesterday that Moyo, as the custodian of the Public Health Act, should urgently address the key drivers of cholera and typhoid in order to permanently eliminate the diseases and avoid future recurrence.

"It is appalling that in 2018, people are still dying of such a preventable disease", she said.

As of Friday morning, there have been more than 4,000 suspected cases, including 58 confirmed cases and 25 cholera-related deaths, World Health Organization said.
