The importance of a veteran team can't be overstated, so its reassuring to see that Torchlight Frontiers development is being led by Max Schaefer, former Runic Games and Blizzard North co-founder, and the development team includes members responsible for games such as the original Diablo.

The first Torchlight game was released in 2009 with its sequel coming in 2012.

When developer Runic Games closed its doors previous year, I'm sure many fans weren't expecting to hear about another Torchlight in the future.

But again, it's unclear whether Torchlight Frontiers, the newly announced game, is sticking to series tradition. In true "Torchlight" style, players will team up with friends and their devoted pets to hack and slash their way through a vibrant world, discover ancient ruins of lost civilizations, and courageous dungeons filled with riches and risky creatures, Perfect World said.

As for Schaefer, he's confident that Frontiers represents a positive evolution of the Torchlight universe.

A release date was not provided, but it will be made available on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Despite the closure, Perfect World promised it was "committed to supporting and growing Runic Games' beloved franchises". "We continue to be amazed by the sheer level of talent and wealth of experience that they bring to Torchlight Frontiers", says Im.

"What we wanted to do with this one was two things", Echtra Games CEO Max Schaefer tells IGN. "The team is building something truly special, and we can't wait for fans to play it for the first time at gamescom and PAX West".
