Plane stolen from Seattle airport crashed into nearby island

BREAKING NEWS: Horizon Air Q400 Hijacked from Seattle Airline Worker Steals Aircraft, Crashes Near Seattle

An airplane crashed Friday evening after an airline employee conducted an "unauthorized take-off" according to a Sea-Tac International Airport official.

An airline mechanic who stole a Horizon Air plane from a Seattle airport told air traffic controllers that he was a "broken guy" but also joked about whether the airline would hire him as a pilot if he landed safely.

Two F-15 fighter jets scrambled from Portland "minutes later" to intercept it, according to Pierce County Sheriff's Office.

"Some dude stole a plane from #Seatac (Allegedly), did a loop-the-loop, nearly crashed into #ChambersBay, then crossed in front of our party, chased by fighter jets and subsequently crashed".

Alaska Airlines planes sit on the tarmac at Sea-Tac International Airport Friday evening, August 10, 2018, in SeaTac, Wash.

The governor of Washington, Jay Inslee, thanked the Air National Guard from Washington and OR on Twitter "for scrambling jets to keep Washingtonians safe". On Saturday, Alaska said he handled baggage and towed aircraft at the airport.

The Bombardier Q400 turboprop is designed for short-distance flights and can seat 76 passengers, Alaska Air said.

A Horizon Air Bombardier Dash 8 Q400, reported to be hijacked, flies over University Place, Washington, the USA, before crashing in the South Puget Sound, August 10, 2018 in this still image taken from a video obtained from social media. They pursued the aircraft before it went down on Ketron Island, between Tacoma and Olympia.

"Got a few screws loose, I guess", he is heard saying in the recording. "Well I would hope it would be for a guy like me". An Alaska Air spokesman said he did not have information about how the incident occurred.

Witnesses described the surreal scene after the plane left the airport.

Witnesses on the ground also said the plane was being followed by military aircraft before it crashed. Separate audio, being shared on social media, seems to suggest the man thought he could land the aircraft by himself because he had played "some video games".

He said he'd "like to apologize to each and every one of them".

The plane crashed on Ketron Island, a small island in the Puget Sound that is home to about two dozen residents.

Erroll Southers, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent and transportation security expert, told the Associated Press, that the man later identified as Russell likely had some pilot training and military craft that could have prevented a tragedy. NORAD said the fighters were attempting to direct him out over the Pacific Ocean when it went down but did not fire on the aircraft. I don't know man! "I don't know what the burnage is like on takeoff, but it burned quite a bit faster than I expected".

"We're working to find out everything we possibly can about what happened", he said. "Never really knew it until now". "To our knowledge, he didn't have a pilot's license".

He estimated that the plane at its lowest point was no more than 100 feet (30.5 meters) above the water.

Government officials and executives at Alaska Air and Horizon repeatedly said it was too early to draw conclusions about the employee's behavior or precisely what security changes should be made in response to Friday night's freakish incident.
