Some players were closer to Lyle than others - and a handful of them find themselves near the top of the leaderboard presenting the chance of an extra emotional outcome.
But for all the buzz Woods generated on Saturday, the reality is that capturing a 15th major from four shots back of the front-running Brooks Koepka will require something special.
"Just very frustrated that I've worked my way into a chance to win this tournament, just to kind of throw it away on a bad decision", he said.
Koepka, who in June became the first man to win back-to-back US Opens since Curtis Strange in 1988-89, could become only the fourth player to win the US Open and PGA Championship in the same year, following fellow Americans Gene Sarazen in 1922, Ben Hogan in 1948 and Jack Nicklaus in 1980.
"I know I can shoot around a 7 or 8 under around here. But I think a part of everyone is playing for Jarrod out here this week".
Scott stopped short of saying there was a tangible feeling to hold on to on the golf course when it came to his matec... but at the same time admitted fate can be an interesting animal.
"Some things are meant to be", he said.
Koepka blew out the U.S. Open field at Erin Hills a year ago with a record-tying finish of 16 under, this after his short-game coach got right up in his face on the range and told him, "You're no good". Players try to downplay it, and I've downplayed it over the years myself because you're trying to downplay it yourself a little bit, but it's a pretty intense environment out there.
MAJOR MELTDOWNS. Jordan Spieth will nearly certainly have to wait at least another year to complete his career grand slam bid after a hot run up the leaderboard was destroyed by an eventful triple bogey.
Despite the triple bogey, his round of 71 left him in a tie for third.
"He's got a great head on his shoulders", Furyk said.
Despite being eight shots back and tied 28th the Texan was not throwing in the towel.
"Now then a couple of years have slipped by and I haven't contended", Scott said.
Spieth wasn't the only player to have a triple bogey nightmare.
The US Open champion, who had led by five shots, carded a four-under 66 to stay ahead of Australia's Adam Scott. Woodland went over the green onto a slope at the back of another bunker, and his next shot went through the green back into the first bunker.
Wallace moved up the leaderboard thanks to a hole in one on the par-three 16th, describing it as the "best shot of my life".
Here's reaction from the top two golfers in the clubhouse, Woodland and Kisner.
"It was nice", Woodland told reporters. "The golf course is playing soft, it's gettable, you have to make birdies. It was nice to have that in my back pocket, been there in that same situation, and came out on top". In fact, after draining a 10-footer for par to keep his front-nine momentum intact, Woods had birdie putts of 20, 16, 14, 8 and 20 feet at the 11th through 15th holes, a 20-footer for eagle at the 17th and a 14-footer for birdie at the 18th - and made none of them.
And then, in a game which delivered so much, they were headbutted by reality, in the shape of dogged Everton . Here are five things that I believe we have learned from Everton's opening game of the season.
He scored his first senior team goal with a lovely move around his defender and a fine finish to the far post. That's not surprising, because I know from experience that everyone is a bit rusty for the first game back.
