More than 500 hikers stranded on an Indonesian volcano have been rescued and evacuated, most safely, officials said Tuesday.

Arifianto, who uses one name, said rescuers will escort trekkers down the mountain.

In December 2004, a massive magnitude 9.1 quake off Sumatra triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries.

Miss Stevens, a medical student, and Miss Coulson, a biochemistry graduate reportedly feared for their lives, as they ran to shelter when rocks came flying during a landslide.

State news agency Antara yesterday reported that a baby had been safely delivered at an emergency shelter in Sembalun district, two days after the natural disaster, with four more women expected to give birth. They were absolutely terrified. "There have been many aftershocks, although they are not strong so far".

The stranded hikers were thought to include citizens from the United States, France, the Netherlands, Thailand, among others.

Hundreds of other hikers managed to get off the mountain on Sunday, according to officials.

The initial natural disaster on Sunday was followed by 60 smaller quakes, according to the BBC, with the largest reaching magnitude 5.7.

Hundreds of buildings were destroyed across Lombok, including a health clinic, and Sutopo said more than 220 people suffered serious injuries.

Indonesia is no stranger to destructive earthquakes, sitting on the area of intense seismic and volcanic activity known as the Pacific Ring of Fire.

In 2004, a tsunami caused by an quake of magnitude 9.3 on the Richter scale, left 220,000 dead in several countries of the Indian Ocean, of which 168,000 were Indonesians.
