New documents have been released from Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's time on the Kenneth Starr team investigating Bill Clinton that reveal his resistance to issuing an indictment of a sitting president. Democratic senators have been infuriated with how Grassley and other Republicans have released Kavanaugh's documents in a slow trickle since the papers began arriving at the Senate late last week.
The memo, tucked toward the end of almost 10,000 pages released Friday, provides greater insight into Kavanaugh's views on executive power that are expected to feature prominently in his Senate confirmation hearings. Democrats have warned that Kavanaugh may be unwilling to protect special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing probe of Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's Senate confirmation hearings will officially begin on September 4, according to an announcement by Senate Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) on Friday. "He's met with dozens of senators who have nothing but positive things to say", Grassley said in a statement. Senators are scheduled to question Kavanaugh on September 5. His confirmation will require a simple majority in the 100-seat Senate, where Republicans hold a 51-49 edge over Democrats and independents. "It's time for the American people to hear directly from Judge Kavanaugh". More sessions with Democrats are expected to be held in the coming weeks.
The California Democrat has already indicated on multiple occasions that she will vote against Kavanaugh, tweeting just minutues after his nomination was announced that she "will oppose his nomination to the Supreme Court" because Kavanaugh "represents a direct and fundamental threat to the rights and health care of hundreds of millions of Americans".
Schumer and Feinstein announced last week they plan to meet with Kavanaugh after the Senate returns from its shortened recess on August 15, and urge him to ask the National Archives and President George W. Bush to support the release of "all of his files" from his time spent working in the Bush White House. He has a record of judicial independence and applying the law as it is written.
Republicans want to confirm Kavanaugh before the Supreme Court starts its new term in October. "Judge Kavanaugh looks forward to addressing the Judiciary Committee in public hearings for the American people to view".
On his time at the White House, Kavanaugh has said, "my five and a half years in the White House - and especially my three years as Staff Secretary for President Bush - were among the most interesting and in many ways among the most instructive".
Going forward, things were made particularly hard for him by the absence of a natural left-back to lend him support. The title is City's to lose, but they'll be hoping for more than just back-to-back championships in England.
