Under the law, permanent residents must live in the country for at least five years before applying for citizenship.

Their lawyer Michael Wildes - who attended the ceremony with them - told reporters outside they had met the five year condition but refused to give more details, according to the New York Times.

The first lady's office declined to comment.

Trump has taken a hardline on immigration policy, criticizing so-called main migration that allows naturalized U.S. citizens to sponsor close relatives for permanent residency.

The idea that family-based immigration could be labeled as "dirty" might have a lot to do with the Knavs' son-in-law.

Mr Knavs, who at 74, is two years older than Mr Trump, is thought to have worked as a vehicle dealer while Mrs Knavs, 73, worked in a textile factory.

Mr Wildes called family-based migration "a bedrock of our immigration process", and when asked if the pair had gained citizenship through the system reportedly replied, "I suppose".

Questions about the couple's immigration status intensified past year as Trump mounted a push to slash legal immigration, including provisions to constrict the ability of US citizens from sponsoring their parents, adult children and siblings for green cards. Green cards can also be obtained through employment, receiving asylum or refugee status, or in other special circumstances.

Along with targeting illegal immigration, Donald Trump has proposed sharply curbing legal immigration.

Advocates for restricting legal immigration have pointed to the imbalance in favor of family connections as evidence of the need for reform, calling for a "merit-based" system that would choose immigrants based on need in the US.

Experts estimate those measures, so far resisted by Congress, would cut legal immigration into the USA almost in half.
