British Columbia's coroners service says 134 people died of illicit-drug overdoses in July.

According to the new statistics, July was the second deadliest month so far in 2018 for fatal overdoses in BC.

The months with the highest number of overdose deaths in the Interior were May and June, tied at 24 deaths. This is a decrease from an average 12.75 deaths per month in all of 2017.

The month with the highest number of drug overdose deaths in B.C.so far was March, with 162 deaths.

The service says about four people fatally overdose every day in the province, which leads the country in illicit-drug deaths.

"The Interior Health Authority was the lone health authority that did not see an increase in the number of illicit drug overdose deaths month-over-month", says Spokesperson Andy Watson.

The Interior Health region saw 17 overdose deaths this month, down from the average of 20.3 (calculated since the start of 2017).

The month with the lowest number of drug overdose deaths so far was February, with 102 deaths.

"We encourage people using substances to not use alone, and use in the company (some someone) who can either administer naloxone or call 911 for help should someone be dealing with a bad batch of drugs", he said.
