The National Hurricane Center said the Hawaiian Islands should monitor the storm's progress.

Hector is about 1360 miles (2190 kilometers) east of South Point, Hawaii, and is forecast to cross into the central Pacific by Sunday night or early Monday.

Hurricane Hector was swirling harmlessly in the Pacific about 1,700 miles east of Big Island but it grew into a category three hurricane on Friday as its maximum sustained winds reached 120mph.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 140 miles per hour (220 km/h) with higher gusts.

Little change in strength was expected for Monday, but some fluctuations in wind speed and a gradual weakening is forecast for Monday night, forecasters said.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles (45 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km).

On the forecast track, Hector could make its closest pass to Hawaii's Big Island on Wednesday.

While there are no coastal watches or warnings in effect, the NHC said that people on the Hawaiian islands should keep an eye on the storm. Forecasters warned late Sunday a slight deviation of its path to the north would significantly increase potential impacts to the state of Hawaii.

State officials urged residents to take precaution and prepare for the storm.

Remember that the forecast track and intensity can and will change.

"Hector is our first hurricane this year".

Officials urge that residents prepare an action plan if they need to shelter in place or evacuate their homes, and have an emergency kit with a minimum of 14 days of food, water and other supplies. Lava from the volcano has destroyed more than 700 structures, including residences, since eruptions began in May.
