Donald Trump has been criticized for failing to plainly denounce white supremacists and neo-Nazis, instead always adding qualifiers to blame "both sides" or otherwise excuse or deflect blame from white nationalists whose rhetoric fueled violence and resulted in one death at last year's Unite the Right rally. University of Virginia students will march on their Charlottesville campus Saturday night, Debbie tells Scott Simon on Weekend Edition Saturday.

The student rally escalated enough to prompt a lockdown at UVA medical. Controversy also surrounded the planned removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a downtown park.

Last year's rally exposed a racial divide in the city, Debbie says.

While organizer Jason Kessler calls the D.C. rally a fight for 'white civil rights' and promotes the white nationalist talking points that "European Americans" are facing reduced population and destruction of history and culture, Fox isn't covering how this rhetoric endangers minorities.

Things escalated when police surrounded class halls.

Demonstrators on Sunday chanted, "Will you protect us?"

Law enforcement officials faced blistering criticism in the wake of last year's rally for what was perceived as a passive response to the violence that unfolded.

So far, three arrests have been made inside the security area that has been set up downtown. A state police helicopter later crashed, killing two troopers.

The crowd converged on Booker T. Washington Park to mark the first anniversary of the deadly Unite the Right rally a year ago.

We live in the age of martyrs. Upon her arrest, she was found to be in possession of a metal baton, say police.

"This anniversary is also a time to look forward". Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam said the rally "reawakened our commitment to fight back against that ugliness of racism and bigotry". Hatred has no home in this Commonwealth.

Observing from the mall was Brian Moran, Virginia secretary of public safety, who was here a year ago and watched from the sixth floor of the Wells Fargo building the violent clashes on Market Street below, and famously compared the sporadic skirmishes to a hockey match. "We said it wouldn't happen again".

"I'm trying to speak up for the issues, which is what she would want done, not the focus on her, but the focus on the issues that still need to be resolved", Susan Bro, Heyer's mother, told MSNBC.

"This is not all about Heather", said Bro. "We all have a responsibility to be involved and to act".

Police have been unveiling their plans for this weekend's Unite the Right 2, with a Sunday afternoon rally at Lafayette Square.

But similar far-right protests have been dwarfed by counterprotesters.

NBC12 will have crews in both Charlottesville and D.C. throughout the weekend and will have updates both on air and online.
