The Jordanian Interior Ministry said in a statement on Saturday that the blast hit a security patrol in the Christian-majority town of al-Fuheis, located 20 kilometers northwest of Amman, on Friday evening.

Jordanian search teams pulled the bodies of three attackers from the rubble of their hideout, hours after they opened fire and set off explosions that killed four security force members trying to storm the building.

No group immediately took responsibility.

King Abdullah, a Middle East ally of Western powers against Islamist militancy who has also safeguarded Jordan's peace treaty with Israel, has been among the most vocal leaders in the region in warning of threats posed by radical groups. The bomb exploded in an area where police usually stop during the event.

Ambulances, bulldozers and police cars were deployed around the building in the Naqab al-Dabour residential neighbourhood in Salt, television footage showed.

Ghuneimat initially said one officer was killed, but later updated the death toll to four.

In initial statements late Saturday, government spokeswoman Jumana Ghuneimat said three members of the security forces were killed and that five suspects were in custody.

The Hala Akhbar news website linked to Jordan's military said on Sunday that the suspects are Jordanians and that the cell planned to attack security installations and other sensitive targets.

Police said on Friday a gas canister stored in the van was behind the blast near a gendarmerie parking lot close to the site of a music festival in the town of Fuheis outside Amman.

Several incidents over the past few years have jolted the Arab kingdom, which has been comparatively unscathed by the uprisings, civil wars and Islamist militancy that have swept the Middle East since 2011.

"The building in which the terrorist cell was found is about to fall and will be demolished to prevent a sudden collapse", Ghunaimat added.

Prime Minister Omar Al-Razzaz vowed that Jordan would "not be complacent in the hunt for terrorists".

Ghneimat said that the security forces raided the house in Salt after receiving a tip.

Jordanian authorities say a bomb has killed a policeman near the capital.
