Brazil World Cup victor Ronaldo is in intensive care in Ibiza suffering from pneumonia.

According to the Diario de Ibiza, he has now been admitted to the ICU of the Nuestra Señora del Rosario Polyclinic.

It quoted hospital sources as saying he was still in intensive care but he was making good progress.

Staff at both hospitals refused to give an update on the 41-year-old's health for privacy reasons when contacted by Diario de Ibiza.

He tweeted: "Guys, I had a bad case of influenza here in Ibiza, I was hospitalised on Friday, but everything is under control!"

Ronaldo owns property on Ibiza, a Spanish Mediterranean island, and is a frequent visitor.

He is believed to have arrived in Ibiza for a summer break a few days ago. Tissue swells, and it can cause coughing and breathing difficulties.

Ronaldo, who was on holiday when he was taken ill, retired from football in 2011 following a hugely successful career that featured stints at PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Brazilian sides Corinthians and Cruzeiro as well as Real Madrid, where he is a club ambassador. Throughout a prosperous career, he scored 62 goals in 98 worldwide appearances for Brazil.

He represented his country in three World Cups, including the 2002 edition, when Brazil won its fifth tournament title.

He finished his career with 12 goals in the World Cup finals, tying with Pele for the all-time record.

Since retirement, however, he has battled thyroid problems and gained significant weight.
