The powerful quake struck the Indonesian tourist island of Lombok, killing a number of people and shaking neighboring Bali, as authorities on Monday said thousands of houses were damaged and the death toll could climb.

The quake was the second in a week to hit Lombok.

Aid workers are trying to help the thousands of people who have been left homeless and without clean water, food, medicine or shelter. It added that the quake will not generate tsunamis.

A magnitude 5.9 quake struck Lombok Island in West Nusa Tenggara on Thursday afternoon, only four days after a magnitude 7 natural disaster devastated the island.

Lombok was hit by another natural disaster on Thursday, the third in little over a week, causing panic and damage to buildings.

Twenty-four people were injured by falling debris in the tremor, Nugroho said.

The government says more than 1,400 people were injured and more than 156,000 displaced.

The 5.9-magnitude aftershock struck on Thursday, further weakening any buildings still standing in the wake of Sunday's 7.0 quake and a 6.4 tremor on July 29.

He estimated 75 per cent of houses are damaged in some villages in east and north Lombok.

There are fears that two collapsed mosques in north Lombok had been filled with worshippers. That number is set to rise as more victims are found in the rubble and pulled from collapsed buildings.

Reuters news agency quoted a witness as saying the latest quake sent people onto the streets in panic and caused buildings to collapse.

Tourists had evacuated or left the country themselves following Sunday's quake.

Some evacuees have complained of being ignored or experiencing long delays for supplies to arrive at shelters.

Wiranto uses one name like many Indonesians.

"We still have supplies for the next few days, but I'm not sure about after that", Billa Rabbani, a spokeswoman from the Peduli Anak orphanage, told AFP. "I need diapers, I need milk".

A field hospital has also been established near an evacuation centre catering to more than 500 people in the village of Tanjung.
