Rodolfo Rodriguez was beaten around 7:30 p.m. July 4 on a sidewalk in the unincorporated Willowbrook area.

Investigators initially believed Rodriguez may have bumped into a young girl who was with Jones, prompting her to assault him.

Jones, who is the girl's mother, then allegedly exploded, shoving Rodriguez to the ground, picking up a brick and hitting him in the face with it.

'I didn't even bump into her kid, ' Rodriguez told CNN.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says detectives took 30-year-old Laquisha Jones into custody late Tuesday in Los Angeles and booked her into jail for investigation of assault with a deadly weapon.

Without warning, the woman hit him with a concrete block, he said, and enlisted a group of men to kick him.

"She was yelling at him, 'Go back to your country, ' or 'Go back to Mexico, '" Borjas told the Times. "She took the block of concrete and hit him in his head many times", a witness said.

Rodriguez said he was walking to a nearby park on Wednesday when he passed a woman and a little girl.

Rodriguez's story has gone viral since the attack.

A motive for the attack remains unknown, the newspaper reported.

'I'm just a poor old man; I don't deserve it, ' he told reporters in Spanish outside his home.

The Los Angeles Sherriff's Department (LASD) said in a statement that they obtained a search warrant for Ms Jones, a Los Angeles resident, and arrested her "without incident".

"I can't walk", Rodriguez said.

'I'm not qualified to say she deserves five years or 10 years - that's not going to heal anything or heal me.

"They're gonna put it to a good cause, they're not gonna keep it all for themselves and they're thinking about ways to give back to the community", Galvez said. He was treated for cuts and bruises about his face and released. Another showed Rodriguez in his hospital bed with bruises on his nose, mouth and cheek and swollen eyes.

Only later, when Rodriguez's family began wondering why he hadn't returned home, did they learn he suffered two broken ribs and a broken cheekbone. His grandson, Erik Mendoza, told KCBS-TV that he's confused as to why someone would hurt his grandfather. Mendoza added. "There's no harm that he meant".

Police are still searching for the four men seen in the video attacking Rodriguez.
