England will reach the football showpiece if they beat Croatia in the semi-final on Wednesday.

France booked a placed in the final on Tuesday after pipping Belgium 1-0 in the semi-final clash. On the same day the men's quarter-finals will be held in SW19.

"I gather it wasn't very successful because it did interrupt people's enjoyment of the tennis and what we did last Saturday actually did work very well", said Wimbledon chief executive Richard Lewis.

Fans will, however, be able to follow the action in Russian Federation on their phones and tablets using the tournament's wifi signal.

Wimbledon is standing firm, however, on its decision not to change the start time of Sunday's men's final to avoid a conflict with the World Cup final, even if England makes it that far, Lewis reiterated.

According to respondents, with the two finals coinciding with one another, only 8 per cent of those watching the tennis state they are prepared to stick with the coverage should the match run over into the start of the World Cup final. Four thousand spectators fled in search of pubs, while others huddled around screens within the grounds.

Those who stuck around seemed to be more interested in following the action in Russian Federation on their electronic devices than watching the tennis match taking place in front of them.

"Saturday was one of the most special days I can remember at the championships".

Said Lewis: "We want people to be able to enjoy in this modern era the fact that this is a tennis event but that there is something else very special going on".

"I was out and about around the grounds and you could tell when England had scored".

"We didn't have one single complaint of anybody here feeling that the football interfered with their enjoyment of Wimbledon".

Moreover, Lewis said the All England Club would not erect TV screens on the grounds so ticket holders could watch the World Cup, nor will they use the existing oversize screen on Henman Hill behind Court No. 1 for any goal other than tennis.
