Ryanair has announced it will cancel up to 30 Irish flights this Thursday, during a strike by pilots.

The budget airline said that all flights from the Republic to Europe will operate as normal.

The airline blamed some Aer Lingus pilots whose airline would benefit from the disruption for organising the strike.

The disruptions were caused after Irish trade union pilots directly employed by Ryanair voted to go on strike for the first time over a dispute regarding new working practices.

It said all customers on cancelled flights received text and email notification yesterday.

The airline said customer service teams are helping them with refunds and transfers to alternative flights.

Forsa had accused Ryanair management of lacking sincerity in talks with the pilots it represents by even refusing to meet them at a neutral venue which Forsa would pay for.

Ryanair said: "We regrettably must plan for some disruptions on Thursday, and try to minimise their impact, especially upon Irish customers and their families travelling on holidays to Portugal, France, Spain, Italy and Greece".

It said on its website: 'We have this morning planned to cancel up to 30 of our 290 flights to and from Irish airports on Thurs 12th. However, Forsa had failed to respond to its requests, it said.

Unions have said further action may follow if the airline does not make concessions on some employment terms. This makes it hard for Ryanair to plan ways to work around the strike, and it means that a huge number of consumers could be affected too.
