The International Commission on Stratigraphy approved proposals for two other ages: the Middle Holocene Northgrippian Age and the Early Holocene Greenlandian Age with beginnings defined at climatic events that happened about 8,300 years and 11,700 years ago, respectively.

Every one of the three ages includes the "Holocene Epoch", which started toward the finish of the last Ice Age and have been portrayed by an abundance of residue found on the bottom of the ocean and of the mineral calcite, which was found in caverns. Earth is now situated in the Phanerozoic Eon, Cenozoic Era, Quaternary Period, Holocene Epoch and Meghalayan Age.

Geologists divide the planet's 4.54-billion-year history into a series of smaller subdivisions, Laura Geggel writes forLive Science.

This brand new classification is named after a particular rock formation that is found in a cave in northeast India.

This deviation now defines a boundary between two new ages titled the Meghalayan and Northgrippian, a time when changes in monsoons forced civilisations to break apart and populations from Egypt to the Yangtze River Valley to migrate.

These new stages come from the International Commission on Stratigraphy, or ICS, and they've created a bit of controversy in the scientific community. This latest geological epoch of Earth started with a global warming event that pushed the planet out of the last Ice Age.

"In these stalagmites there is a very highly detailed record of climate change, which is shown by the geochemistry of the precipitated material - the carbonate formed by the dripping of water in the cave", ICS secretary general Philip Gibbard said in a statement.

According to the order of the things, there is the Greenlandian age that is between 11700 years to 8326 years ago, then comes the Northgrippian, which was 8326 year to 4250 years ago and now, Meghalayan age, which started 4250 years ago and is still ticking. This revealed that the planet experienced yet another massive change in its climate about 4,200 years ago, particularly at mid and low altitudes.

Already the decision to discriminate ages within the Holocene has drawn fire from some scientists who believe the move is premature.

The Meghalayan Age is unique among the many intervals of the Geologic Time Scale in that its beginning coincides with a global cultural event produced by a global climatic event, said Stanley Finney, a professor at Long Beach State University in the USA and Secretary General of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) in France.

.

"After the original paper and going through various committees, they've suddenly announced [the Meghalayan] and stuck it on the diagram", said Mark Maslin, a professor of geography at University College London, according to the BBC.

The new updates help understanding more about Earth's full geological history.
