Former US Senator Jon Kyl would serve as the Sherpa for President Donald Trump's nominee to the Supreme Court, the White House said today, hours ahead of the scheduled announcement in this regard.

Trump has called the Supreme Court pick "the most important decision a US president can make", and advocates say that nominating a conservative justice to replace Kennedy could overturn long-standing decisions such as Roe v. Wade. Conservative figures have expressed a variety of opinions about which potential Justice would have the best impact on the next generation for the Court.

Rep. Jackie Walorksi, R-2nd, said in a statement that Trump "made an excellent choice".

Kennedy was long a swing vote on the nine-member court, and Trump's choice - his second opportunity in 18 months to fill a Supreme Court vacancy - will dramatically affect many aspects of American life, from abortion to voting rights to immigration.

Speaking at the White House, Kavanaugh pledged to preserve the Constitution and said that "a judge must be independent and must interpret the law, not make the law". He was the first in his family to go to college, at the University of Notre Dame, then worked as a taxi driver to finance his legal education at Georgetown Law School.

Outside the Supreme Court on Monday night, hundreds of people protested heatedly over Kavanaugh's nomination.

As soon as Trump announces his Supreme Court pick, Judicial Crisis Network, a conservative political advocacy organization, says it will start airing ads in Alabama, Indiana, North Dakota and West Virginia promoting the nomination. They may need every Republican senator to secure the seat without Democratic help.

Trump seems eager to reveal his pick, raising the subject on Sunday afternoon as well.

Barrett - a longtime Notre Dame Law School professor who became a federal appeals judge last fall - excited social conservatives with her testimony when questioned about her Roman Catholic faith in her nomination hearings past year.

The Center for American Progress Action Fund, which is affiliated with Tanden's group, is among the groups taking part in a rally at the Supreme Court tonight to protest Trump's pick.

Once Trump names his nominee, all eyes will shift to a handful of moderate Democratic and Republican senators.

The White House is hoping the Senate moves quickly to confirm Kavanaugh before the midterm elections in November threaten to unfurl the narrow Republican majority in the chamber and nix the precious leverage the GOP holds over some red state Democrats up for reelection in 2018. He also was a key aide to Kenneth Starr during Starr's investigation of President Bill Clinton, worked on behalf of George W. Bush's campaign during the election recount in 2000 and served in the Bush White House. Doug Jones, D-Ala. said in a Sunday interview on CNN's State of the Union. Hardiman, meanwhile, served with Trump's sister on the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit in Philadelphia. "We don't know who the nominee is going to be yet", Sen.

Democrats are warning that Trump's nominee would jeopardize some of progressives' most important policy priorities in recent decades - including rulings that legalized abortion and same-sex marriage, as well as former President Barack Obama's health care law. "Casey's willingness to oppose any nominee off of a list that includes judges he has previously voted for shows he will oppose President Trump at all costs, even when doing so makes him look like a partisan hack".
