Lisa Page's notorious texts with Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Peter Strzok led supporters of President Donald Trump to claim the feds had it out for Trump and supported Hillary Clinton, and she was supposed to answer questions from the House Judiciary and Oversight and Government Reform Committees on how the Justice Department handled certain decisions leading up to the 2016 election.

In a statement, Amy Jeffress said her client did not have enough time to prepare and had asked the the House Judiciary and Oversight and Government Reform Committees to schedule another date. "Congressional subpoenas for testimony are not optional". She has an obligation to come and testify.

"If she wants to come plead the Fifth, that's her choice". It's mandatory. She needs to comply'. Page exchanged text messages critical of Donald Trump with Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Peter Strzok, who will testify publicly before the panel Thursday.

Page was subpoenaed to appear for a private interview Wednesday, but her lawyer informed the committees Tuesday that she would not show up.

In tweets, Trump has branded the couple the "FBI lovers" and said their bias was at the heart of Mueller's "Witch Hunt".

Two former Federal Bureau of Investigation officials who worked on the Russian Federation probe may be getting "cold feet" ahead of planned appearances on Capitol Hill this week, US President Donald Trump claimed in a tweet on Tuesday.

The top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (N.Y.), suggested Wednesday that "the real reason" Republicans were weighing contempt measures against Page was to "set up a dramatic thing" before Strzok's public interview Thursday.

The committees are interested in Page as part of their investigation into what they say is bias at the Justice Department.

The special counsel's team has already issued 20 indictments and secured guilty pleas from five individuals. A recent Justice Department Inspector General report discussed the text messages, acknowledging that they were evidence of political bias, but only showed concern that Strzok may have been willing to act on that bias while carrying out official duties.

In one message on August 8, 2016, Strzok reassured Page that she needn't worry about Trump winning the White House. "Right?!" Page wrote to Strzok.

Strzok had a leading role in the Clinton probe and was removed from the Mueller investigation after the texts were discovered a year ago.

In his tweet, Trump called Strzok and Page the "FBI lovers" in a reference to the fact that the pair were in a romantic relationship.
