Trump arrives in Brussels ahead of potentially contentious North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit

Trump heads to Europe amid frayed alliances and worries about his tilt to Putin Trump Presses NATO on Defense Spending Ahead of Summit

In a combative start to his North Atlantic Treaty Organisation visit, U.S. President Donald Trump asserted Wednesday that a pipeline project has made Germany "totally controlled" by and "captive to Russia" and blasted allies' defence spending, opening what was expected to be a fraught summit with a list of grievances involving American allies.

As Trump's arrival approached, European Council President Donald Tusk warned him to stop criticizing its trading and military partners.

"Dear America, appreciate your allies".

"I said, 'You know, Angela, I can't guarantee it, but we're protecting you, '" Trump said, referring to German Chancellor Angela Merkel, at a Montana rally on July 5.

"So we're protecting Germany, we're protecting France, we're protecting all of these countries and then numerous of these countries go out and make a pipeline deal with Russia where they're paying billions of dollars into the coffers of Russia", Trump said.

"I would like to thank all our nations for the efforts they are making".

But instead of trying to engage with what Trump actually said during the Fox News interview, Gardner pretended Trump actually meant the opposite of what he said.

"So we will see what happens, we have a long, lovely week". "So we're supposed to protect you against Russian Federation, but they're paying billions of dollars to Russian Federation".

"The notion that America First Trump so obviously supports Brexit and one of its populist proponents is bound to give real pause for a lot of people, who are likely to conclude that if it's that great for the USA, then it will be at the expense of the U.K".

And he said: "Dear America, appreciate your allies - after all you don't have that many".

Tusk said that when Trump meets Putin afterwards in Helsinki, he should remember "who is your strategic friend and who is your strategic problem".

With tensions in the Western defense alliance already running high over Trump's demands for more contributions to ease the burden on USA taxpayers, and a nationalistic stance that has seen trade disputes threaten economic growth in Europe, the latest remarks will fuel concerns among allies over the US role in keeping the peace that has reigned since World War Two.

Trump made the comment while addressing reporters before he and First Lady Melania Trump boarded presidential helicopter Marine One. And then numerous of the countries go out and make a pipeline deal with Russian Federation where they're paying billions of dollars into the coffers of Russian Federation. "Will they reimburse the USA?" tweeted the president.

"I expect open and frank discussions, and there are disagreements on different issues", he said as he arrived at NATO's gleaming new headquarters for the summit.
