U.S. President Donald Trump flies into Britain on Thursday for talks with the leader of the United States' closest ally in Europe, and tea with Queen Elizabeth, set against a backdrop of protests and what he described as the country's turmoil over Brexit.

"My message to those coming to the protests in London is that this must be peaceful and good-spirited. To those intent on causing trouble or breaking the law, I simply say: you are not welcome", he said in a statement.

Khan, a member of Britain's opposition Labour Party who has clashed with Trump in the past, added that protests against Trump were not anti-American and instead reflected Londoners' opposition to "the politics of fear and despair". In London, we speak with Sheila Menon, social justice activist and one of the organizers behind the Trump baby blimp.

Trump has clashed in the past with May - even though she is a conservative who shares his view that defense spending should be raised - and with her predecessor, David Cameron, who challenged Trump's anti-Muslim campaign stance as "divisive, stupid and wrong". This is a working, not a state visit.

Trump will then join wife Melania as they head to Windsor Castle for their audience with the Queen before flying out to Scotland, where they are expected to visit both Trump Turnberry and Trump International Golf Links Scotland.

President Donald Trump arrived in London Thursday afternoon, where he will attend a state dinner and meet with British Prime Minister Theresa May - after making his mark on the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Belgium. Many thousands of Britons are expected to protest against Mr Trump in London and other cities.

He will largely be avoiding London, where a mass demonstration is planned and where the "Trump Baby" balloon will be flown above Westminster. "I'd like to see them be able to work it out so it could go quickly, whatever they work out".

Just hours before arriving in London, the United States president questioned progress in Brexit talks and Britain's new plan to remain close to the European Union on regulatory standards for goods.

Gardner, who works with refugees as part of her doctoral research at the London School of Economics, said Trump's speeches about refugees and immigrants are "a very risky line of rhetoric to be normalized".

Trump will depart Britain Friday for Finland to prepare for a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin Monday in Helsinki.

In the weeks before the American president's inauguration, May sent Trump a copy of the text of Churchill's 1941 Christmas Eve radio address to Americans, delivered while the prime minister was staying with U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt after the attack on Pearl Harbor. "This is not an accident", said Woody Johnson, Trump's ambassador to the United Kingdom.

They will then move on to Chequers, the prime minister's country retreat in Buckinghamshire, for a working lunch and "bilateral talks on a range of worldwide issues".

US allies played down Trump's suggestion he was responsible for increased defense spending.
