Total lunar eclipse expected on July 28

Bloody Moon Longest Total Lunar Eclipse will be on July 27
Cary Marshall | 06 July, 2018, 23:49

NASA has said the Blood Moon lunar eclipse phenomenon will be not only the longest one of the century but is just four minutes short to be the longest lunar eclipse to have ever been seen from Earth.

Scientists say the reason this lunar eclipse is especially long is because the moon is passing nearly directly through the central part of Earth's shadow.

The previous total lunar eclipse which occurred on January 31, when the moon passed through the southern part of shadow centre, it lasted 1 hour and 16 minutes and the next total lunar eclipse is expected to witness on January 21, 2019 but it will last only for 1 hour and 2 minutes as it will pass through shadow centre, north part.

If the sun's rays are completely blocked, the moon takes on a red or orange hue, giving it the name "Blood Moon".

Nigeria and most other parts of the world will on July 27, 2018 experience blood moon- a spectacular total lunar eclipse. Earlier, it also occurred at the end of January.

The eclipse will take place at or around midnight for Madagascar and the Middle East. Europe and Africa will view it sometime between sunset and midnight on 27 July, whereas most of Asia, Indonesia and Australia will view it in the morning - sometime between midnight and sunrise on 28 July. From within the umbra, all direct sunlight is blocked by Earth as in the case of a total lunar eclipse. A partial eclipse precedes and follows the lunar eclipse, each time lasting 1 hour and 6 minutes. The umbra is the darkest part of Earth's shadow.

The rare event occurs when Mars reaches its closest point to the sun as the same time as Earth's orbit brings it directly between the two. That event delighted moon watchers by being both a blood moon and super moon at the same time.
